Bare Arch, Dressed
An ordinary metal garden arch from the garden center, anchored properly and dressed to whatever theme you are running. People walk through it rather than past it, it takes up no lawn, and the same arch does a different job every year.

here we go
How to make it
-
Build it TALL, not wide
These arches assemble three ways from the same box: tall at 88 in. high by 63 wide, wide at 73 by 76, and extra-wide at 73 by 91. Over a path you want the tall one, every time. Build it on the lawn before you site it; the legs are only 14 in. front to back and it is easier to carry assembled than to fight it upright.
oops-proofingThe two wide configurations are 73 in. at the crown, which is 6 ft 1 in. That is below head height for a tall adult BEFORE anything is hung from it, and the whole point of the build is to hang things from it. Those settings are for a plant to grow over, not for people to walk under. It is the same box either way, so this costs nothing to get right and cannot be undone later without stripping the dressing off.
-
Measure the walk before you site it
The tall setting gives a 63 in. opening, near enough five feet three. Measure your path and measure any gate, step or planting the legs would land in. The legs need soft ground or a border; they do not stand on paving without a base.
oops-proofingRemember the opening gets NARROWER once it is dressed. Cloth or branches down both sides can easily take a foot out of it, and a four-foot gap is tight for two people abreast or one adult with a child and a bucket.
-
Anchor it as though it will blow over, because it will
Drive a long stake or a rebar pin beside each leg and cable-tie the leg to it, low down and again higher up. On hard ground, stand each leg in a bucket of concrete instead and hide the buckets in planting.
oops-proofingThe little spikes that come on the bottom of a garden arch are for holding a rose steady, not for holding a sail. The moment you dress it you have made twenty square feet of windage out of something that weighs eight pounds, and it goes over onto whoever is walking under it. This is the step to not skip.
-
Check the headroom with the tape, not by eye
Anything hanging from the crown wants to clear 6 ft 6 in. off the path. Stand under it and look up before you decide it is fine, then walk through it at normal speed in the dark.
oops-proofingIt is a path, at night, and people will be looking at the yard rather than at their feet. Nothing on an arch should be at face height, and nothing should be trailing where it can be caught by a costume or a pushchair.
-
Heavy on the legs, light on the crown
This is the rule the whole build runs on. The arch is load tested to 20 lb of evenly distributed HANGING weight, which is plenty for web, cloth, tape, lights and paper, and is not much at all for wood. Anything with real weight gets cable-tied to the legs, low down, where the load goes straight into the ground. Only light things hang off the top.
oops-proofingA bundle of dead branches is heavier than it looks and a wet one is heavier again. Tie branches to the legs and let them lean inward over the opening rather than suspending them from the crown, and check the weight after rain rather than the day you built it. Twenty pounds is the manufacturer's figure for even loading; a bundle wired to one shoulder is not even loading.
-
Dress the sides, not just the top
The crown is what reads from the road and the legs are what people pass within inches of. Work the dressing down both legs to about waist height so there is something to see close up, and leave the very bottom clear so nothing catches feet.
oops-proofingDo not dress it evenly all over. Heavier at one shoulder, thinner at the other, and a gap somewhere. Even coverage reads as a store entrance; uneven coverage reads as something that grew there.
-
Pick the dressing off the theme, not off the craft aisle
Woodland and Cryptid Crossing: thin bare branches tied to the legs, leaning in, until it reads as a gap in a thicket rather than as an arch. Zombies: torn cloth in long vertical strips and barrier tape wound down one leg, which is the cheapest dressing here and one of the best. Spiders: stretch web pulled thin and anchored at a few points, never draped as a sheet. Witch's Brew: branches on the legs and a lighted hat hung from the crown, which weighs nothing. Christmas: garland down both legs and one light run, warm or cool to match the rest of the yard and never both.
oops-proofingOne material, used a lot, beats four materials used a little. The arch that looks homemade in the bad way is the one with webbing AND lights AND cloth AND branches AND bones on it. Pick the one thing the theme is actually about.
-
Light it from the far side
Put a light on the ground beyond the arch aiming back towards the road, so people approaching see the dressing in silhouette and the gap glowing through it. Lit from the near side you see a decorated frame; lit from behind you see a way in.
Cable ties rather than wire throughout. Wire cuts hands in the dark and takes an hour to undo in November; forty cable ties go on in twenty minutes and come off with one pass of the side cutters. Buy black ones, not the white ones, which catch every light. The arch itself is the reusable part and at twenty dollars it is the best value in this catalog: the same frame does a different holiday every few months and the dressing is what changes. Buy a plain one with no scrollwork, no finials and no gate, because plain disappears under dressing and ornament fights it. It is thin tube steel, so touch up any scratch in the powder coat with a dab of paint before it goes out. That is where rust starts, and a rust streak down a leg is visible in daylight long after Halloween. On any lot where the walk is the only clear ground, this is the one large object that fits, because it stands over the path instead of on the grass.
