When Do Halloween Decorations Go on Sale, and What Is Worth Buying on November 1?

Everything goes on clearance the day after. What is actually worth carrying home, and what is cheap because nobody should want it?

the short answer

Clearance starts on the morning of 1 November and gets deeper for roughly a week until the floor space is wanted for Christmas. Buy storage-proof things you already know you need a year out: solid plastic props, stakes, lighting, extension cords and timers. Skip foam, anything with a motor you cannot test, and the big centrepiece you have not planned a spot for.

5 minute read.

Why the first week and not the second

Halloween stock is seasonal floor space rather than inventory a store wants to hold. The aisle is needed for Christmas, which in most chains is already half built behind it, so the markdowns are aggressive and they escalate daily rather than weekly.

The trade-off is the obvious one. On the first morning the selection is complete and the discount is smallest. By the end of the week the discount is deepest and what is left is what nobody wanted, which is usually a correct verdict rather than an oversight.

For anything specific, go early. For bulk consumables where you do not care which one you get, go late.

Worth it, and not

Buy Skip Why
Outdoor extension cords, timers, stakesAnything foamThe boring hardware is the stuff you always need and never budget for, and it does not date. Foam does not survive a season outdoors at any price.
Solid plastic props for quantity effectsThe single centrepieceTwenty cheap markers make a graveyard. One discounted big thing you had no plan for becomes the thing you decorate around next year.
LED string lights and spotlightsBattery props you cannot testLighting is reusable across themes and holidays. An untested motor or battery box on clearance is usually on clearance for a reason.
Plywood, paint, fixingsCostumes for next yearBuild materials keep indefinitely and the free plans on this site use them. Sizes and tastes change in twelve months.

Nothing on this table is a price claim. Clearance depth varies by chain, by store and by what is left on the shelf, so the useful rule is about what survives a year in a garage rather than about a percentage.

Buy against a plan, not against a discount

The reason clearance goes wrong is that a discount is a reason to buy something and a plan is a reason to buy a particular thing. Walking in with the second is the whole difference.

Before 1 November, walk your own yard while it is still decorated and write down what was missing. Almost always it is the same three answers: not enough ground lighting, one dark corner, and not enough cord to reach it. Those are exactly the things on clearance and exactly the things nobody buys on the day, because they are not exciting.

If you know your lot shape, you already know how many spots it has and which ones you left empty this year. That list is the shopping list, and it is worth more than any percentage on a sign.

the one thing to check before it goes in the car

Whether it stores flat and dry. Garage space is the real constraint on a Halloween collection, not money, and the piece that is cheap in November but needs its own bin costs you every year afterwards. Flat builds stack against a wall. A large hollow prop does not, and it is the one that gets thrown out in three years having been used twice.

Where this usually goes wrong

Buying the big discounted centrepiece with no spot for it

It arrives next October as a constraint rather than an asset: everything else gets arranged around the thing that was on sale. Decide the layout first, then the discount is useful.

Stocking up on foam because it is nearly free

It will be mush by the middle of next October whatever it cost. Nearly free is still money for one season of something that looks bad after a week of rain.

Ignoring the hardware aisle

Cords, timers, stakes and spare bulbs are the least exciting things marked down and the ones you will definitely use. They are also usually still there on day five.

plot it in your own yard

See where this goes on your yard shape: pick your lot and the plan lists every spot and what fills it, so the empty ones become a clearance list rather than a guess.

Are Plywood Decorations Cheaper Than Inflatables Over a Few Years?

Usually yes, but not for the reason people give. It is not the purchase price, it is that one of them has a motor and a seam and the other does not.

Safely, yes, on GFCI and within the circuit load. Sensibly, no. A twenty dollar timer halves the running cost and roughly doubles the life of an inflatable blower.
